ACTIVITY - 0 4
Rolling friction
Aim :   To determine the force of limiting friction for rolling of a roller (or trolley) on a
horizontal plane.
 Apparatus : Horizontal plane with pulley, roller ( or trolley), string, rough balance, slotted weights, pan, weight box.
Diagram :
Procedure :
         Note the weight of trolley and pan using rough balance.
         Keep the trolley on the horizontal surface. Tie one end of the string to the hook of the trolley.
         Pass the string over pulley and connect its free end to the pan. Increase the weight gradually in pan so that trolley will move with uniform slow  velocity (without acceleration) on the horizontal surface. Note the weight in pan.
          Place the 50 g weight on the trolley and repeat the above procedure.
         Take three reading independently by increasing the weight on trolley by step of 50 g. In each case find the force of limiting friction (P).
 Observations :
1)         Acceleration due to gravity              =          980 cm/s2
2)         Weight of the trolley= W0 = ………………gmwt
3)         Weight of the pan = P0 = ………………gmwt
Observations table  :
bs. No.
Weight on the trolley
W1 gmwt
Total load
W= (W0 +W1) gmwt
Weight in pan
P1 gmwt
Total effort
P= (P0 +P1) gmwt

Conclusion :
 As the weight of trolley increases the effort increases
ACTIVITY - 0 5
VARIATION OF  RANGE WITH ANGLE OF PROJECTION
Aim :         To study the variation in range of jet of water with angle of projection.
Apparatus :  Inclined plane with Protractor, jet of water / toy gun
Diagram: Diagram showing range and height of projectile at different angles .
Procedure : (Initial velocity of projection “u” should be same)
*      Fix the jet/toy gun at the edge of inclined plane.
*      Adjust the inclined plane at an angle of 300 with the help of protractor.
*      Start the water flow or click the gun.
*      Measure the range on horizontal level.
*      Perform the same for 20°, 45°, 60°, 70°.
Observation Table  :
Sr No
Angle of projection
Range of projectile
1
200

2
300

3
450

4
600

5
700

Conclusion :
*      By changing the angle of projection, the range of projectile also changes.
*      Range is maximum for 45°.
*      Horizontal range is same for complementary angles.
